How I ended up with quail
It started with a podcast — someone talking about raising quail in their garage, and I remember thinking, I could do that.
I have celiac disease, and raising my own meat had been on my mind for a while. I’d already looked into rabbits, chickens, ducks, and geese, and my family enjoyed eating all of them. But it was the 2022 egg shortage that finally pushed me to pull the trigger and get my own birds. Quail turned out to be the right fit — I like eggs, I wanted meat I could raise myself, and quail made that possible without needing much land.
What I want you to know
You don’t need much space to raise quail. That’s really the whole point of this site — showing what’s actually worked (and what hasn’t) so you can decide if it’s right for you too.
Funny enough, when I bought this property in the early 2000s, having land was the whole appeal. These days my quail live indoors, and so does my main garden. You never really know where things are going to take you.
This isn’t an expert’s guide — just an honest record of what I’ve learned raising quail, mistakes included.
